What you can indulge in when you are pregnant

What to avoid, and what to indulge in – the top surprising foods you can still eat during pregnancy

It’s well known that your diet is limited during pregnancy. Without small indulgences like alcohol, sushi and camembert, life can feel a bit boring at mealtimes.

But there’s good reason to be extra careful. Bacterial diseases such as Listeriosis, Salmonellosis and Toxoplasmosis mean that, while pregnant, you should stay away from food that is known to harbour these harmful bacteria. Common culprits can include raw seafood, soft cheeses, cold processed cooked meats, soft serve ice cream, raw eggs, pre-packaged salads and fish high in mercury levels.

However, your tastebuds don’t have to suffer when pregnant. Here’s our favourite, nutritious foods that you can still indulge in during pregnancy:

Feast on omega-3 rich salmon to get your seafood fix throughout the week. Just make sure you’re eating it cooked, and not sashimi grade. We love serving ours with brown rice and cooked green veggies – select our delicious salmon kedgeree when ordering your subscription plan to get your dose of omega-3s.

Tuna Cauliflower Pasta Bake

Hard cheeses

You don’t have to ‘pass’ on the cheeseboard. Simply pick the hard cheeses. That means tasty, cheddar and, parmesan, are all yours for the taking. Even spreadable cheeses, such as cream cheese and cottage cheese, are safe as long as they are kept in the fridge. We love indulging in our tuna wholemeal pasta bake for a hit of cheesy-goodness.

You will be happy to know that eggs can still feature in your Sunday brunch, just make sure your eggs are cooked completely though. It’s best to ask for them hard fried or scrambled. Boiled eggs also make for a simple, healthy snack when you’re on the go. High in choline, eggs are great for healthy brain development.

Greek yogurt

Whilst a drive-thru soft serve may be off the cards during pregnancy, you can still get your dairy fix with some natural yogurt. High in calcium, which is vital for bone health, natural yogurt is a sweet, healthy snack option. Make your own healthy sundae by adding frozen berries, nuts and maple syrup.

… and to drink?

Try a sparkling water seltzerFor women and men wanting to conceive, alcohol can affect your level of fertility. While pregnant, the effects of alcohol are much more serious, heightening your chance of miscarriage, birth defects, and premature birth. That’s why it is essential that alcohol is completely eliminated from your diet during pregnancy.

However, this doesn’t mean the sundowners and celebrations have to stop. A great alternative to alcohol is a seltzer of sparkling water, fresh fruit and fruit juice. Pour in a champagne glass to cheers with friends.
